Almost everyone has been there. You ask a chatbot a simple question and get an answer that misses the point. You rephrase, the bot understands something different again, and after the third loop you annoyedly click through to a human. Over the years, the classic chatbot has earned a dubious reputation, often deservedly.

The numbers are unambiguous: 40 percent of consumers name their biggest complaint as a chatbot being unable to relate to their issue1. 81 percent expect a bot to hand over to a human when needed, yet only 38 percent experience this happening reliably1. And 72 percent never use a company's chatbot again after a bad experience2. No wonder many companies wince at the word chatbot. But the technology has evolved, fundamentally so. Interactive video avatars are not the next version of the old chatbot. They are a different category of knowledge interface. Let us look at why.

Where the classic chatbot fails

To understand the progress, an honest look at the weaknesses of the old generation is worthwhile. Classic chatbots usually suffer from three things.

  3. Third, the experience. A blinking cursor in a text box feels anonymous and tedious. You have to read, interpret, follow up. For quick information that may suffice. For complex or sensitive topics, it is the wrong stage.
